Empty Watercraft Illustrations

May 14, 2011

Below are illustrations of empty watercraft.  The first two are pencils and the third an oil painting.  The shading and drawing style in the first illustration of a catamaran include a drawing method Monte exhibited in his more early work.

The definitive reasons Monte was fond of empty watercraft in his work can only be speculated on, but through his personality and known longings, it is reasonably possible his use of empty watercraft was based in his desire to create a feeling of anticipation toward a planned journey, the stories a watercraft could tell or a sadness created by the sight of an unmanned and unused watercraft.

As noted previously, Monte was very fond of wooden skiffs.  Much of this fondness undoubtedly found origins in the wooden skiffs used for many years at Big Lake and during Monte’s younger years.

A wooden skiff that did not leak was a highly sought after watercraft.
